GRAVITY

Myth Buster #4 This one has been weighing on me…

What the scale tells us: OUR RELATIONSHIP TO GRAVITY

What the scale does NOT tell us: our health, our fitness, our worth, our desirability, our beauty, our lovability

During the course of a day numerous shifts occur within us and around us. This includes our energy levels, our mood, our concentration, our stress, and, you guessed it…OUR WEIGHT. Yes, our weight fluctuates consistently because we as humans are fluid not static beings. For example, if we eat a saltier meal or a meal higher in carbohydrates, our body will likely hold onto more water which will then be reflected on the scale. Does this indicate weight gain? NO. Does this indicate a change in weight? YES. Hydration plays a significant role in the number on the scale. Rachael Hartley, RD, explains that drinking two cups of water weighs one pound. Further she shares that sodium intake, stress levels, sleep, weather, and what you did the previous day can all influence the number on the scale. Ladies, being on your menstrual cycle can dramatically influence the number due to water retention resulting from spikes in estrogen and progesterone. The number you’re seeing is truly your body in process and in relation to gravity AT THAT EXACT MOMENT.

The biggest issue with the scale is not the physical nuances described above but how these nuances affect a person’s mental and emotional well-being. Time and time again that number seems to impact how an individual feels about them self and how they treat themselves throughout the day. That sure gives that number a significant amount of power.

Many years ago, I made the decision to step away from the scale as I realized weighing myself was not helpful for me. I don’t know my weight and I honestly don’t care what my weight is. What matters is how I take care of myself and I realize my weight will do what it needs to do. I wish you all this sense of freedom. Maybe you’ll join me by stepping off the scale and into your being.
